Where Bonk came from
In December 2022 Solana was at a low point: FTX, one of its largest backers, had collapsed the month before and SOL had fallen more than 90% from its high. A group of 22 anonymous Solana developers launched BONK and gave away half the supply to NFT collectors, developers, artists and active community members. The stated purpose was to put a fun token in as many Solana wallets as possible and to counter the influence of venture capital on the chain.
The airdrop worked. BONK became the default meme coin of Solana, dozens of apps integrated it, and the community later burned a meaningful share of supply. In 2025 the team behind BONK launched the letsbonk.fun launchpad, which for a period rivalled pump.fun for new Solana token launches, and BonkBot became a widely used Telegram trading bot.
