Where Shiba Inu came from
SHIB was created in August 2020 by an anonymous developer known as Ryoshi, who described it as an experiment in decentralised community building and a "Dogecoin killer". Half of the 1 quadrillion supply was sent to Vitalik Buterin's wallet, apparently to signal that no one controlled it. In May 2021 Buterin burned about 410 trillion SHIB, roughly 41% of supply, and donated most of the rest, about 50 trillion tokens worth over $1 billion at the time, to an Indian Covid relief fund.
The project has since added ShibaSwap (a DEX), the LEASH and BONE tokens, and in August 2023 Shibarium, an Ethereum layer 2 whose transactions burn SHIB. Ongoing community burns have removed a further share of supply, though the total remains in the hundreds of trillions.
Shiba Inu price history
- 2020 to early 2021: effectively worthless, then a first spike in May 2021 during the Dogecoin mania.
- October 2021: the all-time high of $0.000086 on 27 October 2021, briefly making SHIB a top-ten cryptocurrency by market cap.
- 2022 to 2023: a decline of about 90% with the bear market.
- 2024: a rally to about $0.000045 in March 2024 during the meme coin revival, then a fade.
